 2.  EDWARD (SANDERS)2 SAUNDERS I (EDWARD1) was born August 10, 1625 in England, and died 1672 in Wicomica Parish, Lancaster Co.,VA.  He married MARY WEBB May 1660 in Northumberland County, VA, daughter of GILES WEBB and ELIZABETH.  She died 1683.

Notes for EDWARD (SANDERS) SAUNDERS I:  Notes From Various Sources which are listed with the note.

EDWARD. SAUNDERS, JUSTICE AND 'CHIRURGEON,' 1660.

"At a Court held for Northumberland co ye 22d of June 1669 Anno f R R Caroli i 21 Oc.

P'sent, Col Peter Ashton           Mr William Presley

Capt John Rogers           Capt Corn. Lyster

This day by order from ye right Honrble ye Governour Mr Edward Saunders & Mr Ambrose Fielding were sworn Justices of ye Peace for this county" (The other Justices were Capt. John Mottrom and Mr. Nicholas Owen. In the next five years the additional Justices were Col. St. Leger Codd (1671), Thomas Matthews, the "T. M." of the MS. (1672), Mr. Francis Lee (1673), Nicholas Green (1675), Philip Sharpleigh and Edward Porteus (1676), (grandfather of Bishop Porteus, of London). At this same court (1669) "Thomas Holbrook was appointed constable for the court; George Clark for ye north side of Great Wicomico, John Nicholls for ye Dividing Creek, William Jallon for Cherry Poynt, Wm. Shoares for Matapony."

Edward Saunders, of Northumberland county, Chirurgeon, (Surgeon) 1660, was probably he whom Hotten mentions as coming to Virginia in 1635 in the ship "Safety," aged 9, with his father, Thomas, aged 40, and brother Thomas, aged 13. Others of this family may also have come to Virginia. Until 1634 all immigrants were landed at James City, and the commander at "Poynt Comfort" was required to administer the oath of "Allegiance and Supremacy" (Hen. 1, 166). Before 1660, Edward Saunders removed from James river to Northumberland county--named for the noble Percy, but called "Chicacone," until after 1645, when it was represented in the Assembly by Capt. John Mottrom, who died in 1655. Act of 1649: "All south of the Potomac shall be accounted within the county of Northumberland," * * and, after 1st of September, 1649, "from that day, and not before, it shall be lawful for any of the inhabitants to remove themselves to the north side of Charles (York) river and Rapp river." This, because of the massacre by the Indians in 1644, when the whites had fled. The Northumberland patents began 1648, with Capt. Francis Poythress to collect the assessments. At first, commanders of plantations held monthly courts, with right of appeal to the Quarter Court held by the Governor and Council. These were succeeded by Commissioners of Monthly courts, later called County Courts, when commissioners were first called Justices, in 1645. Edward Saunders, or Sanders (as it is variously spelled in the old records) was born in England 1625. His will, written in Northumberland county, 4th October, 1669, was not proved until 1672. He evidently had much intercourse with Isle of Wight county, and in 1660 he stated in a court "held that month at Capt. Peter Ashton's house," that he had married Mary, widow of John Hudnall,(*) who had removed to Northumberland in 1655 from Isle of Wight county, and died 1658, and whose plantation was on the south side of Wicomico river, near "the Island." (His descendant, James Saunders, of North Carolina, wrote in Edenton, N. C. (1824), a "Pamphlet of the Saunders Family," which gives an unbroken line from the immigrant; and his son, Rev. Joseph Saunders continued the chapters, and his son, Col. Wm. L. Saunders, Secretary of State, and compiler of its "Colonial Records," added more to the pamphlet, which is greatly valued in the family.) Edward Saunders was physician to Col. George Colclough (former Justice) at his death in 1662--and the bill for his services not being paid by the estate, he presented it in court, and Elizabeth Colclough, widow and executrix was ordered to pay it. His land patents are given on another page--(also see Virginia Mogazine of History, I-456) His wife was born Elizabeth Webb (and probably of Isle of Wight county). (See Webb.) She married (3) Mr. William Thomas,(+) and was granted a commission of administration on his estate, 1678. The appraisers were William Downing, Sr., and Samuel Webb. She died 1683-4, and Ebenezer Saunders and Edward Saunders, her sons, were granted letters of administration on her estate, and gave bond of 30,000 pounds of tobacco. The appraisers were Thomas Webb, John Cocke, William Horem and others. (Northumberland Records.) It is best to conclude with Edward2 Saunders, the second son, before going on with the line of Ebenezer, the eldest. He was born in 1663, and died (*) John Hudnall (1655) "of Isle of Wight county"--lands on Wicomico river. John Hudnall, August 24, 1658, 250 acres south side of Great Wicomico, near the Island. John Hudnall (1665) 250 acres on Dennis Creek. These lands were formerly granted to John Hudnall, deceased, by patent August, 24, 1658. His residence, on the river. Hudnall Partian (1695) 150 acres in Northumberland. Hudnall Partian, son to Harry Hudnall, baptized 1686. Hudnall Joseph, son to Thomas Hudnall, baptized 1679. Hudnall Richard, son to Thomas Hudnall, baptized 1689. Hudnall Thomas, was of the vestry of Upper and Lower St. Stephens parish, 1781. Hudnall Joseph was of the vestry of Upper and Lower St. Stephens parish, 1784. Hudnall Richard, of the vestry of Wicomico parish, Northumberland, 1784 with George and David Ball (St. Stephen's Parish Register). Hudnall Ezekiel, and Thomas, of Lancaster county, in 1763 and 1776. Hudnall Richard, 1751,--land in Northumberland county deeded to him by Col. Peter Conway. (Hayden's Virginia Genealogies.)

W.W. 25 April 1719 W.P. 20 May 1719

This proves that Elizabeth Saunders Cockerill first married to Ebenezer Saunders, the father of Edward Saunders, and married next to John Cockerill.

Now, regarding proof that Elizabeth was the daughter of Peter Presley and Elizabeth Thompson (daughter of Richard Thompson and Ursula Bysshe/Bish):

from THE JENKINS OF NORTHERN NECK AND OLD 96 (1988) by Amelia Gilreath:

Peter Presley Sr. d. 1693 in Northumberland County. He and wife Elizabeth Thompson had issue:

 1. Elizabeth m.(1) Ebenezer Saunders (2) John Cockerill had sons Presly, Willoughby, Peter, etc.

2. Jane Presly b. 29 June 1664

m. (1) Richard Rogers (son of Capt. John Rogers), and brother of Wm. Rogers, 2nd husband of Ann Jenkins)

m. (2) Capt. Christopher Neale (Jr) (Sheriff, Justice, and Burgess) their son Presly Neale m. Margaret Sanford, dau of Robert Sanford Jr.

3. Ursula Presly

m.(1) Daniel Neale of Westmoreland Co., VA

m. (2) Wharton Ransdall

4. Mary Presly b. c1665

m. Charnock Cox, son of Vincent* conflicting accounts of ch., but Self family claims: Martha Cox m. Henry Self b. 1695

5. Peter Presly b. 1683 d. 1718 without issue

-----------      JENKINS OF NORTHERN NECK (VA.) AND OLD 96, p. 125

(and also reprinted in THE CLELAND-JENKINS BOOK, 1997, also by Amelia   Gilreath, p. 183):

The following Deed first recorded by Col. (Peter) Presly in 1709 was burned with other records in 1710, and again recorded by Col. Presly in 1749 (1719?). It is of great value in determining family relationships... 21 Sept. 1709 - Christopher Neale, Gentleman(,) and Jane his  wife, late Jane Rogers, widow of Richard Rogers, Gent., dec'd., AND ONE OF THE DAUGHTERS OF PETER PRESLY, Sr., GENT, late dec'd, of St. Stephen's Parish - to Peter Presly, now elder, of same parish, gentleman, for 264 acres...on N.W. side of Chincahan Creek(,) part of 1,000 acres granted by ____to Richard Russell, dated 25 Sept. 1657(,)...deserted and taken up by James Pope by patent dated 12th Oct. 1660 for a valuable consideration; by sd. (said) Pope made over unto Wm. Presly and Peter Presly, the father, and donor of the hereby granted land to the sd. Jane by deed, dated 24 April 1662 ("this date was evidently erroneous and was 1682") sd. 264 acres bounded by the land of sd. Peter Presly, party to these presents, and land OF THE LATE EBENEZER SANDERS, dec'd, (son of Mary Thomas, dec'd(,) AND EDWARD SANDERS), now in the occupation of JOHN COCKRILL, WHO TRIED THE WIDOW OF sd. SANDERS...

To my understanding, this deed does not say that Ebenezer Sanders' widow, Mrs. John Cockrill, is a sister of Jane Presley Rogers Neale, but apparently this has been interpretation of several researchers. The Sa(u)nders land adjoining the 264 acres may well have been (at one time) part of the original 1,000 tract owned by the late Peter Presley, but it apparently came into the possession of Ebenezer Sanders & wife Elizabeth (Presley?)Saunders Cockrill from his father Edward Sanders and mother Mary Webb Hudnall Saunders Thomas, or why else would they be named and their relationships given such detail?

So I don't see that this document necessarily proves Elizabeth Saunders Cockerill was the same Elizabeth Presley, daughter of Peter Presley and Elizabeth Thompson. Of course, there are many associations with their relatives, and the same family names are handed down, so certainly the Saunders and Cockrill families were close friends of the Presleys if they were not related as the books say.

I should add that few researchers know these records and these families as well as Amelia Gilreath, having studied them for so many years and having gotten an intimate feel for them all. I would think that if she has a theory, it is likely the best theory, and I am not in a position to second-guess any opinion she might have. she already has other connections to some of these same families, so she is hardly likely to say a relationship exists just because she wants it to be so. The names Presly, Peter, Ursula, are all handed down in the Cockerill family.

I still do not see documented proof that Peter Presley and wife Elizabeth Thompson had a daughter Elizabeth, whether she married Saunders and Cockerell or anybody else. Maybe it is in the Jenkins books and I need to  go through them more carefully. There are many records abstracted, and perhaps I overlooked it. There are supposed to be deeds or a deed between John Cockerell and a husband of his supposed Presley sistier-in-law, but I don't know if these deeds prove the relationship or not.  There are a lot of associations between the children of this generation, who would be cousins, but I don't see documents directly between Elizabeth and any of the Presley siblings, other than the deed above referencing Jane Presley Rodgers Neal and the Saunders with regard to Peter Presley's  estate.

Jenkins of the Northern Neck, p. 123 states that Elizabeth Presley Cockerill died (April-May) 1719, and Peter Presley Jr. 's will (Nov. 19, 1718) doesn't name her, only his two sisters Mary and Ursula. However, his sister Jane Presley Rodgers Neale is proved, and she is omitted from Peter Presley's will.

JAMESTOWN TO WASHINGTON: LITTLE BIOGRAPHIES OF 12 GENERATIONS FROM BEHEATHLAND TO COX, 1607-1950 by Louise Cox Morrell, p. 28 lists just these 4 chidlren of Peter Presley & Elizabeth Thompson: Jane, Mary, Ursula, & Peter Jr.

THE COX FAMILY, WESTMORELAND CO., VIRGINIA by Laura Collison Ray, p. 10, also shows no daughter Elizabeth; only Jane, Mary, Ursula, and Peter Presley Jr.

However, the two Jenkins books by Gilreath and many later researchers do include Elizabeth Presley Saunders Cockerell. This site also lists Ebenezer Saunders' wife as Elizabeth Presley, daughter of Peter Presley and Elizabeth Thompson:

 http://pesaunders.home.mindspring.com/Saunders.htm

In fact, it appears all over the internet that Elizabeth Presley married Ebenezer Saunders & John Cockerill.

There are three IGI records at the LDS of interest:

Ebenezer Saunders m. c1682 Elizabeth Presley

Ebenezer Saunders m. c1684 Elizabeth Presley

Ebenezer Saunders m. c1687 Elizabeth Philips*

Regarding the will of Elizabeth Cockerill:

The will shows she owned land IN COAN, which may or may not be part of the original Coan Hall estate of Col. Mottram. I don't have other land records showing exact boundaries of Elizabeth Saunders Cockerill's property or the Coan Hall property. So I don't know whether or not she could have inherited part of Coan from her grandmother,     Ursula Bish Thompson Mottram Colclough Allerton.

The reference in Elizabeth Saunders Cockerell's will to "my sister Hannah Cockerill" probably refers to her husband John Cockerell's sister Hannah b. 20 Feb 1680, "unmarried" (Jenkins by Gilreath, p.146) Or is there any evidence that Edward Phillips had a daughter Hannah who married a Cockerill?

Sources saying that Elizabeth Saunders Cockerill was a PHILLIPS:

EARLY SETTLERS OF ALA. by James E. Saunders (1899): p.341 says Ebenezer Saunders (son of Edward Saunders & Mary Webb Hudnall) m. Elizabeth Phillips, daughter      of Edward Phillips, and says "(See note on page 363)" but on p.363 there are only Webb family notes. Continued over on p.364, there in a list of references, including:

Will of Edward Phillips, recorded 1710 York Co., VA.; witnesses James Cook, Orlando Jones & Wm. Jones. (These Joneses were relatives of mine, and Orlando is Martha Washington's grandfather.)It seems odd if James E. Saunders made a mistake, but he also omitted any reference to Elizabeth Phillips Saunders having married second to John Cockerill, which is clearly proved above. A Saunders descendant tells me there were a lot of Phillips connections to Thompsons, and of course Peter Presley married Elizabeth Thompson, daughter of Ursula Bish Thompson (my ancestors on another line). In fact, Ursula Bish Thompson Mottram Colclough Allerton is mentioned elsewhere in Saunders' EARLY SETTLERS OF ALA., but he doesn't mention her as his own ancestor.

 Ursula Bish/Bysshe

m. 1 Richard Thompson

m. 2 Col. John Mottram of Coan Hall

m.3 Maj. George Colclough

m.4 Isaac Allerton Jr. (and their daughter was great-grandmother of President Zachary Taylor)

All the Thompson children went to live at Coan Hall after their mother's marriage to Col. Mottram, and Ursula and Maj. Colclough lived there later  also.  On a Colclough genealogy webpage, George Colclough is described as first   marrying to Elizabeth Webb, some relation to Mary (Webb) Hudnall Saunders Thomas.  However, Gilreath p. 127 states that Col. George Colclough m.1st Elizabeth (Thorowgood) Oversee, widow of Simon Oversee, and daughter of Capt. Adam Thorowgood (whose daughter Anne Chandler, Mrs. John Chandler, calls Elizabeth Colclough "Sister"). Was this the same George Colclough? Did he have 3 wives? The Colclough webpage says he had no children.

 See this site:

http://www.members.fortunecity.com/chtii/colclough/cap11.html

It mentions the lawsuit by the Mottram children which said George Colclough persuaded Col. Mottram to revise his will, after drinking with him all night, and then married Col. Mottram's widow when he died.

The home of the Presleys was called "Northumberland House" (circa1640-50) and this mansion was burned 1812-14 by the British (Gilreath). Morrell, p. 27: "Near the end of the 18th century" it's bricks were reclaimed and used to build "Mantua" nearby on the Coan River.

On another line, my ancestor Susannah Thompson Yarbrough and brothers Drury, Benjamin Jr., & Jennings Thompson (etc.) had a sister Mary Thompson b. c1750 who married a Phillips. I know next to nothing about all these Phillips, but there is a lot about the Thompsons in Saunders' EARLY SETTLERS.

The will of Elizabeth Saunders Cockarell proves she had two marriages. Her family was intimately associated with the Presley & Thompson families, but I cannot understand that the abstracts above prove that she was the daughter of Peter Presley and Elizabeth Thompson (daughter of Richard Thompson & Ursula Bysshe/Bish).

Ursula Bish's line goes back to Sir Oliver Zouche, which may be found at this site:

http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/h/r/Lisbeth-Christensen/GENE1-0012.html (search for "Bysshe") La Zouche is traced to Charlemagne, but I don't see Sir Oliver's descent in La Zouche articles from Burke's Peerage that I have seen.

Regarding Mary Presley who married Charnock Cox: Some name just four children named in Charnock Cox's will, but others list Molly and Elizabeth. William and Peter are additional sons, according to AMERICA'S FIRST FAMILIES webpage (Vincent Cox biography). Others list Martha Cox who married Henry Self b. 1695. Their son Thomas  Self m. Elizabeth Jenkins, d/o Ezekiel, s/o John Jenkins & Martha Garner. The names Presley, Charnock are handed down through the Selfs also. This is my mother's line. Her first husband (my half brother's father) descended from Elizabeth Saunders Cockerill.

The following is from another researcher:

I have not seen Elizabeth (Presley) Saunders Cockarell's will online. I ordered a copy of the will from The VA State Archives. It is found in Northumberland County, VA, Record Book 1718-1726, Reel 4 p 42 and is likely available on film from the Morman Library. In this will she mentions her Cockarell children and her daughter Elizabeth Nelms (that is Elizabeth Saunders) and her son Edward Saunders.

Other good sources of proof are "Early Settlers of Alabama" by James Edmonds Saunders. 1969, p 441 (????) and "Marriages of Some VA Residents" by Wulfeck, Vol. II 1986 p 114.

I did find a source such as Tyler's or William & Mary's that said Ebeneezer Saunders married Elizabeth Phillips. This was proven incorrect by Elizabeth's will.

The Thompson, Saunders and Presley lines are all mine [the writer of this note]. There is an interesting article in The Bulletin of the Northumberland County Historical Society Vol XXXI-1999 titled Sanders Quarter in The Forest, A Study of Mr. Edward Sanders. I also have a copy of thr book John Lewis the Lost Pioneer. and it cites Order Book 1713-1719 p 296 as the last will and testament of Peter Presley Jr. Mary Cox and Ursula Ransdell were the executors. It also says Peter and Elizabeth had five children. Elizabeth who m. Eben Saunders and John Cockrell 2nd. Her dau Elizabeth Saunders m. Ist Samuel Downing and 2nd Charles Nelms Their dau. Hannah Nelms m. Peter Lewis. This is my line and this book is very well documented. It was written by Daniel Long assisted by Dr. J. Motley Booker and James Lewis both of Northumberland Co. The Northumberland Bulletin Vol VI 1969 has an article on the Presleys. The 2000 Vol has one on Richard Thompson. I have more papers to go through but I am satisfied her name was Presley. In 1929 a genealogist in Wash D.C. was paid to find inf on the Lewis, Nelms and Presley lines. The descendents in Ky. still use Charles Nelms Lewis in their line. Do you have any inf, on Elizabeth Thompson Presley marriage to a Conway after the Presley died?

 Test.: THADDEUS MCCARTY,  Cl. C.

William Saunders, the eldest son of Edward, and with whom, as the lineal   ancestor of our family, we have most to do, was born in the year 1718, in the county of Lancaster, at the homestead above mentioned. His youngest son, James Saunders, for whom I was named, wrote (1824) a memoir of the Saunders family of fifteen pages, which his grandson, Col. Wm. L. Saunders, of North Carolina, had printed many years ago, and distributed among his relatives. When the author wrote this memoir he was sixty years old, and his memory extended far back. Moreover, he lived with, and survived, his parents, and fell heir to all the family records. This will account for the specialty in dates which I am able to give for 170 years past. This "Family Memoir" describes William Saunders, above mentioned, as being about five feet eight inches in height, well made, of light complexion and blue eyes, from 150 to 160 pounds in weight, very active and fleet, possessed of agreeable manners, and "a good education for the  times."

"On the 18th of May, 1738, he married Betsy Hubbard, of his own neighborhood, daughter of Thomas Hubbard, of Scotch descent. She was born 22d of February, 1721, and had two brothers, Joseph and Ephraim Hubbard,  (ancestors of the Fosters of Nashville, Tenn). Unlike her husband, she had  dark complexion, black hair and black eyes. She was of common stature and good make, religious and intelligent. She did perhaps come as nigh performing all the duties intended by her Maker for her to do, as any woman of my knowledge." (Family Memoir).

Her memory is honored and cherished by her descendants in a remarkable degree. The issue of this marriage: (1) Thomas, born 18th June, 1739; (2) Mary, orn 6th May, 1741; (3) Jesse, born 21st July, 1743; (4) Winifred, born  24th February, 1746; (5) Frances, born 5th August, 1748; (6) Edward, born 5th May, 1751; (7) Presley, born 19th October, 1753; (8) Joseph, born 7th June, 1757; (9) Ephraim, born 14th March, 1760; (10 and 11) William and James, (twins), born 25th April, 1765. Of the above, our ancestor, Thomas, was the eldest, but we will find it most convenient first to give a brief account of his brothers and sisters.

Mary lived to advanced age, without being married, with her brother Joseph, in Brunswick, where she died.  Jesse Saunders "traveled while young to Granville county, North Carolina, and married Ann, daughter of Colonel Yancey of that county; had many children; moved to Georgia, near Augusta, then to the new purchase in that State, where he died. He was an excellent partisan officer, harassing the British on their way to Yorktown. He had several skirmishes with the enemy, some of them sharp. This brother was in the battle with the  Regulators, as it was called many years before the Revolution and had a horse shot under him, ran several hair-breadth escapes after the battle, while taking up the straggling Regulators; was waylaid and shot, yet, out of them all, Providence delivered him. He appeared never to regard risking his person or his life in performing duties of any kind. There are several of his children I have seen, and I will try and name them: William, Yancey, James (and perhaps Lewis), Betsy, Jesse, and others I can not think of."--(Family Memoir.)

Winifred Saunders "married pretty early in life Mr. Thos. Elliott; had several children, but one of whom (John) is now living, in Brunswick county. Those who died (as far as I know) had no descendants."--(Family Memoir.)  Frances Saunders "married Mr. Abraham White in the county of Lancaster, Va., and had several children, none of whom are living. She married a second husband, Mr. George Davis, and had two children, Holland and  Ephraim. The first lives in Tennessee, and the latter in Brunswick county, Va. She died in advanced age in the county of Brunswick,  Ephraim Saunders "was the ninth child of William and Betsy (Hubbard) Saunders. He was born on the 14th of March, 1760. He moved early to the county of Frederick, married a Miss Edmonds, had several children, three of whom I have seen, to-wit: Ephraim, Elias and Eppa." (Family Memoir.)

William Saunders and his twin brother James (the historian of the family) were the last children of William and Betsy (Hubbard) Saunders. "He was considerably deaf from his infancy, rather of a noisy turn, and a little fractious. He has never married that I know of, and has lived for several years past in the State of Georgia." (Family Memoir).

James Saunders, born in 1765, was the ancestor of the North Carolina branch of the family. He describes himself as having dark hair and blue eyes. He remained with his mother (after the death of his father, which took place when he was quite young) until her death, which occurred when he was about twenty-five years of age. He had determined to remove to the distant West, but his elder brothers persuaded him to remain in Brunswick county three years longer; "when he turned down into the district of Edenton, North Carolina, where he 'peregrinated' (a favorite word with him) until he was about thirty years of age, when he, on the 7th of January, 1798, intermarried with Hannah, widow of Jacob Simons, in the county of Chowan, about seven miles below the town of Edenton. She was the daughter of James Sitterzen, of Perquimans county. She was a large, portly, handsome woman, and an excellent manager of her domestic concerns. She died 12th of May, 1819, leaving only one child. Joseph Hubbard Saunders" who was born on the 26th of December, 1800. He was educated in the country until he was fourteen, when he studied for awhile in the academy at Edenton; was transferred to the academy at Raleigh for about forty months, when he was, on the first of January, 1819, placed in the University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hill; joined the sophomore class, half advanced, and remained until June 7, 1821, when he graduated with much applause and credit to himself and preceptors. He remains a tutor in the college and a student of the law. He is about six feet high, weighs about 200 pounds, and of a dark complexion, with dark hair and eyes" (Family Memoir).

Notes for CAPT. JESSE (SANDERS) SAUNDERS, "RS":

Captain in the Sixth North Carolina (Heitman).
